January 15, 2005
As you know, the Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas Foundation
was
established in September 2001 to undertake charitable programs and
contributions in areas of interest to our daughter, Lauren. It has only
been
with your enduring help and support that we have been able to realize
these
goals specifically benefiting women and children. We offer our sincere
thanks.
We continue to honor Lauren's courageous spirit,
recognizing
that she and the thirty-nine other passengers and crew on United
Airlines
Flight 93, by virtue of their heroic actions, sustained the first
victory in
our present-day war on terrorism.
Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded eight
scholarships to outstanding young women embarking on their college
careers.
These women have written to us with appreciation and heartwarming
messages. Our
several events and benefits have been wonderfully successful, allowing
us to
donate a $50,000 birthing room to Marin General Hospital in California
(Lauren's local hospital); $50,000 to Texas Children's Hospital in
Houston for
the neonatal unit; $15,000 to the Houston Area Women's Center, which
helps
abused women and children with housing, education, and employment;
$5,000 to
the Transylvania County Hospital in North Carolina for the neonatal
unit; and
finally, to create a park in downtown Houston in memory of all of the
victims
of September 11, 2001.
The Greater Houston Preservation Alliance has been
instrumental in developing the Houston park project as has the City and
its
Convention Bureau. We are currently engaged in an engineering study to
determine the most suitable plan for restoring the two historic homes
which
will be in the park and function as tourist and visitor information
offices. An
application for restoration grant funds is in process. We are honored
to be
able to call the park, Lauren's Garden.
Throughout 2004, work has neared completion on the
self-help
book that Lauren had begun to write. The book entitled YOU CAN DO IT,
focuses
on women's self-esteem and was an important project and a personal
dream of
hers. We look forward to publication by Chronicle Books in early 2005.
These beginning years of the Foundation have been highly
productive ones, and have provided an extraordinary journey for our
family. We
are grateful and humbled by your generous support, which has allowed us
to make
these notable achievements. Our country is healing and has gotten
stronger.
Consistent with this spirit of resilience, we are determined to bring
about
positive changes and provide assistance and aid where we can. Lauren
would be
so proud of the projects we've undertaken in her memory. The Foundation
does
not employ any staff, and the Board is comprised of volunteers.
Consequently,
virtually every dollar contributed goes to charity or scholarships.
Finally, to Andrews Kurth LLP and The Bank of Texas,
a special note of thanks as our legal counsel and trustee bank for
tirelessly
guiding us through the years.
